The Shirui Lily, scientifically known as Lilium Mackliniae, is a rare flower found exclusively in the Shirui Hill range in the Ukhrul District of Manipur, India. It is also sometimes referred to as Lilium Mackliniae. This rare, pinkish-white, bell shaped flower is the state flower of Manipur and is known for its unique beauty and endemic in nature.
Shirui village located 18 kilometers from Ukhrul Town and about 97 kilometers from Imphal, the capital of Manipur. It is the home of world famous Shirui (shiroy) Lily. The name Shirui Lily originates from a British Botanist named F. Kingdom Ward who in 1946 discovered the uniqueness of this flower.
The Shirui Lily typically blooms between April and June, with the peak blooming season often falling in May and June. Precisely, the peak blooming season is between May 15 and June 5. During its blooming season the hill is being transformed into a mesmerising sea of clouds. During the Shirui Lily blooming season, especially around the Shirui Lily Festival, people flock to shirui Hills in Ukhrul, Manipur, and movement is often described as resembling a train due to the large number of visitors.
Prior to the declaration as a state festival in the year 2017, the feast has been celebrated locally by the residents of Shirui village, Ukhrul, Manipur, to celebrate the blooming of the Shirui Lily. It was in the year 2017, the Shirui Lily Feast celebrated as state feast and officially launched by the Manipur Tourism Department. The festival since then is held annually during the Shirui Lily’s blooming season, from late May to early June.
The Shirui Lily, found only in the Shirui Hills of Ukhrul is a symbol of peace and purity. It blooms for short span of time, yet its enchanting beauty draws any nature lover to spend at its feet hours and hours. It is not just a beautiful flower but also embodies the cultural heritage and resilience of the Tangkhul Naga people. The successive celebration of Shirui Lily feasts bring people of all walks of life together. During its celebration there is least feeling of indifference towards each other or feeling of rich and poor or educated or uneducated. All come out and take part in the celebrations. The festival showcases the traditional music, dances, folk songs, hand woven crafts and local cuisine of the Tangkhul Naga.
