Teachers' Day in India is also in remembrance of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, the first President of Independent India

In Celebrating Teachers’ Day This Year, We Must Also Remember a Great Scholar’s Dedication to Education

In India, 5th September is celebrated as “TEACHERS’ DAY” to mark the contribution made by the teachers of the society. 5th September is the birthday of a great teacher Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. He was a staunch believer in education, a renowned scholar, President of India and above all a teacher. When Dr. Radhakrishnan became the president of India in 1962, he was approached by some of his students and friends and requested him to allow them to celebrate 5th September, his ‘Birthday’. In Reply, Dr. Radhakrishnan said, “instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege if 5th September is observed as Teachers’ day”. The request showed Dr. Radhakrishnan’s love for the teaching profession. From then onwards, the day has been observed as Teachers’ day in India.

“Teachers’ day” is one occasion that is looked forward by the teachers and students alike. Every year on this day school across the county have programmes and students bring gifts to show their love and respect for their loved teachers. This day is specially set apart to pay that homage the teacher deserves. For sure the sacrifice a teacher does for the students is definitely not repayable. No gift is too huge to compensate and no gift is too small to give tribute. Teachers also need encouragement and support from the community to feel that their devotion to students is appreciated. A teacher believes that he or she must first be a mother or a father to the students that only can qualify him or her to be a good teacher.

The Academic calendar years 2020 and 2021 amidst this global pandemic corona virus, definitely have not been a very smooth sailing and pleasant year for the teachers especially those in the private schools. But on this Teachers’ Day, the students can rise above the situation and take an extra mile by doing something different this year. The gifts given every year in kinds and cash can only be given this year in our own little way into our teachers account through online banking and transferring like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm and what not. This could be to me a creative way of celebrating Teacher’s Day from our own homes without going out. We are people who use smart phones likewise we must also be smart people ‘to think out of the box’ and to do things differently. It may just be a little amount but it will definitely make a huge difference in the little world of the teachers and their families. This is not for monetary motive, but a sign of gratitude and acknowledgement to our teachers. I belief we must ‘do the right thing and we must do it right’ at this situation. I bet ‘You and I’ can be the difference in the life of our teachers in this year of crisis. I have done my part abit dear readers, hope you will do your part as well…

“We must do the right thing and do it right.” Well quoted and i also believe that the differences, how small it may be, brought about by the teachers in the society will pave a better future far beyond this current crisis. L
